The following dimensions and weights are offered as average indicators. There are numerous "series" of containers that are produced and utilized by steamlines, so these specifications may vary slightly, depending on the ocean carrier.

In addition to the equipment listed above, some steamlines offer "Platform" containers. These are containers without walls or a ceiling – just the floor. Platforms are used only for out of gauge cargo.

Remember that the maximum payload weights listed above do not correspond to the permissible weight limits for road and rail transport. Loaded containers rarely weigh more than 50,000 lbs.

Containers carrying out of gauge, or over-sized cargo are equipped with lashing devises which allow for secure strapping and bracing of the cargo.

Always make sure that containers are free from serious defects like holes, splinters, snags, dents or bulges. All equipment should also be clean and free of residue from previous shipments.

OVERWEIGHT CONTAINERS

TEXAS IMPORTERS BEWARE! If your shipper overloads your container, you will be liable for additional charges payable to the steamship line for drayage and reloading plus transportation to move your (two) containers to destination …estimated at $700-800. Please advise your shippers that Texas has road weight limits for ocean freight containers and therefore, not to overload containers beyond the weights below:

20’containers: 35,000 lbs or 15, 876 kg.
40’containers: 44,000 lbs or 19,958 kg.
